this is my first experiment with GEM and Pure Data video on my music, based on simple effects on webcam streaming in real time. No jittering and no sync applied i just did the video and then compose the music like old times :)

This work was inspired to me by “RetroMania“‘s Simon Reynolds, a lecture of these days, in particular reference to the concept of degradation and its fashion in contemporary music. I worked randomly starting recycling a sample of a live gig, just the intro of a larger execution, and I double it and passed through a series of audio effects to “degrade” the signal flow just like it was recorded many years ago and simulating a sort of “dust and memories over tape”. The recording starting point is in reality three months old. The fashion of we commonly call RETRO is an artifact, a simulation and a sort of nostalgia for what we never lived and never will. In a second time I put into this memory trunk some concrete-mechanical noises, high frequencies triggers and then improvise some guitar chords in real time over the texture just like when we unpack a trunk and find together particular objects belongs to different ages of our lives. but even if we put something in it “today” the objects will absorb the dust of time. Our affection and fascination about old noises of our past, old tv themes, old vinyl scratches is the measure of our lack of future. So I painted the whole texture in this way just like when we get excited in front of a childhood ‘s broken toy; first because it was OUR toy, then because it is BROKEN. The video texture is a live webcam streaming focused on my Korg midi controller, not for self-reference reasons. I just like the inner aesthetic geometry of numbers, buttons and knobs. Like an old pelicula we recombine our past events and break them into memories and we like that dusty taste when we recall them to us.
