LOGOS “The idea of dedicating a record to sleeping disorders hit my mind as an illumination when two tracks were already done and I was trying to find out their obscure sense. The more I searched for it the more I couldn’t sleep at night. Composing during nightime, through headphones, is a kind of sleep treatment for me. In a big city like Rome silence is a nearly nonexistent condition; only at night I seem to have the silence I need to concentrate, but some lonely car running down the road always comes to disrupt it. Insomnia is the most common among the most known and clinically studied disorders. I suffered, and I still suffer, from the oddest of them, known as Hypnagogia, or sleeping paralysis. I dedicated to this disorder a track performed in all but real time. It consists in awakening only with the mind, while for some time the body remains asleep and does not respond to our commands. During this time of semi-awakening, sound hallucinations keep arising. In ancient times, these experiences generated beliefs about extra-body travel and demonic possession; today, alas, in the internet age, as soon as we wake up we can find all kinds of scientific information about this pathology, including pharmaceutical treatments.” Marco Bonini

TEKNE This is a project based on the sound of strings. Six strings can generate at least six different worlds; as a guitar player, Bonini always wondered what real multiplication of universes can be obtained by bouncing the strings through the digital world. The noises and field recordings heard in the CD are homemade, and they went through so many elaborations that he cannot remember their origins and the path of their changes. The method is based on multi-strata improvisations (several improvisations on top of one another), then brought back to a more or less stable form by means of montage, and later again mixed on digital platforms.

E’ sorprendente che quando meno te lo aspetti esca sempre qualche disco capace di sorprenderti per gusto, qualità e fatto da qualcuno che non sia uno dei soliti nomi del circuito. Ma di quale circuito stiamo parlando? Di un certo tipo di musica sperimentale italiana che qui da noi si conosce ma che tutto sommato non ha spazio e che solitamente incide all’estero dove forse c’è più attenzione ad un certo tipo di sensibilità. Se proprio non si parla dello stesso tipo di musica Ubik potrebbe essere inserito in un calderone di cui fanno parte anche Nicola Ratti, Giuseppe Ielasi, Claudio Rocchetti, 3/4 Had Been Eliminated, Bellows, Luca Sigurtà e simili, parlo di musica elettronica, non proprio IDM e spesso neppure ritmica, ma spesso si tratta di musica melodica, molto curata, prodotta in modo ineccepibile e spesso molto melodica. Circadian Rythms, Sleep Disorder attinge da quel genere che si è sviluppato dall’ambient e che ha visto brillare gente come Lawrence English, Oren Ambarchi, Tim Hecker giusto per citare quelli più conosciuti. Ubik, al secolo Marco Bonini, parte dalla chitarra e dal laptop e da lì va de-costruendo le tracce manipolando il suono e sviluppandolo su affreschi molto, molto melodici. Il disco tanto ben congegnato che le tracce si succedono una dopo l’altra e scivola via senza che uno se ne accorga, durante i primi ascolti non riuscivo neppure a rendermi conto di quale fosse la durata effettiva, anzi, pensavo che fosse un peccato che si trattasse di un di un disco che bene o male se ne andava via piuttosto velocemente e questo è anche dovuto al fatto che al di là delle belle melodie e dell’ottimo lavoro di produzione, il lavoro di Bonini sia ben proporzionato. Se i lavori più melodici usciti su K12 e Die Schachtel non vi lasciano impassibili Ubik è decisamente da provare.

Circadian rhythm, Sleep Disorder succeeds where Oval’s reboot failed. Ubik uses guitar to great effect here. Glitches are employed for a sense of drama. Unlike Oval’s reboot, this has melodies, Ubik dwells in them. In general glitch can do a lot of good through its microscopic take on melody, rhythm, and texture. Often it is important to slow down the hyperactive tendencies of technology. Ubik understands this as he employs multiple strategies in these seven tracks.

For the opener Ubik brings together glitch rhythms, some beautiful swirling guitar, and random clattering noises. Eventually this comes together into a dash for the end. Giddiness prevails in ‘Melatonin’. The anxiousness comes out gloriously. At times it reminds me of ‘Punchdrunk Love’s’ oddly anxiety-inducing sense of giddy. ‘Light Therapy’ comes closest to a traditional rock sense. Here the guitar is mostly recognizable and allowed to soar, giving the track a sense of clarity. ‘Barbiturates’ takes Ubik’s ideas to their logical conclusion. Repetition plays a large part of the song’s power. Also the intersection between the downright violent electronic effects and the guitar is powerful. Towards the end it becomes classical in nature. Rock and classical battle it out on the song, with rock ultimately emerging triumphant.

Ubik understands the balance between the natural and the edited. Experimental music rarely feels this exciting. Some of the work reminds me of a more pastoral Fennesz, or of a less excitable Christopher Willts. A few of these songs manage to stay nearly stationary, unfolding slowly while others simply explode in a flurry of colorful tones and textures. This is a wild and alive release.

The title gives this one away. Circadian Rhythm, Sleep Disorder is a concept album about sleep disorders and treatments. It’s not just an abstract concept through, Marco Bonini suffers from sleep paralysis and composed the music on this album as a form of treatment for his condition. A solid idea, it makes for a really fascinating record. At this point in my career as a review I’ve listened to a lot of experimental music and this is the most engaging album I’ve heard in the genre all year.

Circadian Rhythm, Sleep Disorder benefits from a lot of analog instrumentation. It gives the listener a grounded framework of familiar sounds, serving as a solid foundation for each track. Building off of that, Ubik’s choices in combining analog style instrumentation and electronic noise are perfect. It gets better and better with repeated plays and rewards anyone with a minimum investment in a quality pair of headphones with an even more remarkably deep listening experience. Also worth mentioning, is that I love the design of the album cover. This is beautiful stuff, don’t pass on this one.

My Room Is The World

POSTATO DA G.M. IL 29 MAGGIO 2012 su RADIONATION

è il titolo del lavoro solista di Marco Bonini, in arte uBiK. Marco è anche il chitarrista dei Mamavegas, band che a Settembre farà la sua prima uscita in Lp per la 42records. L’album è costituito da 6 tracce totalmente strumentali che vanno da sonorità indietronic a sonorità più vicine alla dubstep, passando per beat che richiamano l’hip hop. La prima traccia, Radial Glia, è un pezzo decisamente interessante che potremmo definire puramente electro. Il secondo brano, Arachnoid Trabeculae, è invece troppo “azzardato”. Buona l’idea musicale che però viene esasperata dalle troppe variante e dai troppi loop a volte anche un pò “stretti” per un disco di indietronica, non per uno di dubstep! La terza traccia, Desoil 2.0, ben si collega alla precedente nelle sonorità, distinguendosi nell’essere più diretta e più semplice. Qualche rigo su ho scritto di beat che richiamano l’hip hop, la quarta traccia dell’album, Bohemian Cremation, ha i suoni a cui mi riferivo. Ben costruita e invogliante all’ascolto, sembra ci sia qualcuno che pratichi beatboxing. Plauso anche all’ultima traccia, I’m not myself, anche questa, come la prima, chiaramente figlia di un’elettronica di qualità e più attuale che mai in questi ultimi anni, rea di aver contaminato lo scenario indie-rock! Presi singolarmente, i brani sono invoglianti e ben fatti; nell’insieme sembra essere più una raccolta di brani che un lavoro con un inizio ed una fine.

Ubik non è altro che uno pseudonimo usato da Marco Bonini, chitarrista dei già apprezzabili Mamavegas. Presenta questo EP, che arriva alle nostre orecchie, grazie allʼ etichetta catalana Musica Vermella. My Room Is My World è il titolo del disco, titolo che mette in risalto la parola “stanza”, sostantivo eloquente e ricco di signiﬁcati emblematici, che può essere inteso come barriera tra lʼ autore e il resto del mondo, o come luogo dove il musicista fa entrare i suoni della quotidianità. Indietronica strumentale, computer music “suonata” dove si sente una certa sonorità alla Dntel, ad esempio nellʼ ottima Struggle, ma in maniera meno ambient/intima, a favore di una ricerca sonora varia, che va a creare sensazioni uditive che tracciano perfetti sfondi urbani/paesaggistici che spesso nella vita di tutti i giorni sono soltanto sﬁorati dalla nostra attenzione. I brani più interessanti sono senza ombra di dubbio, oltre la già citata traccia di chiusura, I’m Not Myself e Arachnoid Trabeculae. Anche qui lo spettro di Jimmy Tamborello continua ad aleggiare, ma non è affatto un male, anzi viene forse da chiedersi se lʼ aggiunta di una voce, come nei Postal Service potesse elevare il risultato ﬁnale già di per sè ad un buon livello. Si tratta di un ep ricco di spunti: suoni, rumori, calma, energia, che ci porta in un mondo confusionario ma familiare. Un mondo sonoro che deve uscire dalla stanza? o che vuole entrare in essa? Poco importa: questo disco è la chiave per aprire o chiudere la porta

Ubik - “My room is the world” (Musica Vermella 021)Scrivo per la prima volta su queste pagine di Musica Vermella, netlabel che si divide tra Barcellona e Berlino e che ho scoperto solo da pochi giorni grazie a questa release di Ubik, alias Marco Bonini, chitarrista e produttore romano, di cui ho già accennato mesi fa a proposito della band dei Mamasvegas. “My room is the world” e un album ingegnoso che si divide abilmente tra sperimentazioni elettroniche e chitarristiche. Come nel caso di “Arachnoid Trabeculae”, dominata da una ritmica cigolante e zoppicante che fa da schermo ad invasioni chitarristiche di ogni tipo. Eccentrica e bizzarra. “Desoil 2.0” è uno dei miei brani preferiti, in cui delicati arpeggi di chitarra imbevuta d’effetti galleggiano su una base semi-acquatica farcita da un vasto campionario di glitcherie. Ubik tratta l’elettronica in modo tutt’altro che superficiale, senza scendere a compromessi con formule facili, ma cercando accuratamente un’originalità sonora che contraddistingue quest’album da molte altre produzioni. Il top di “My room is the world” sopraggiunge a mio parere con la tensione elettrica di “I’m not myself”. Una ritmica incisiva su bassi lunghi e graffi elettronici che mantengono alta la tensione. Fino ad interventi dai profumi esotici, visite virtuali in giungle di transistor. Giochi di spostamenti ritmici in cui l’abilità con la materia elettronica di Ubik fuoriesce in tutta la sua energia. Un piccolo applauso anche per il delicato art-work firmato da Cris Romagosa. Sicuramente uno degli album più intelligenti e innovativi ascoltati di recente.

TONMAGNET

Eine einprägende Melodie öffnet und bohrt sich in den Kopf, um dort durch eine Endlosschleife zu verweilen. So in etwa fühlte ich mich nach dem ersten hören des 1. Tracks dieser Scheibe. Zu erst dachte ich, hoffentlich geht das jetzt nicht so weiter. Irgendwie wurde ich diesbezüglich nicht enttäuscht. Denn die restlichen 5 Tracks unterscheiden sich doch sehr voneinander und vom 1. Track. Dominiert dabei eher eine bleibende Melodie, sind es bei den anderen Tracks die kleinen Spielereien. Da gibt es neben verträumten Tönen auch treibende Beats. Eine nette Scheibe für zwischendurch die immer Neues zu bieten und zu entdecken hat.
